How Natural Stone Veneer Transformed the Marlow Luxury Apartments in Columbia, Maryland

by | Natural Stone

The Marlow luxury apartments in Columbia, Maryland, is a contemporary urban example of how thoughtful design features, such as an outdoor courtyard and gathering space, can make a multifamily residential property feel like a retreat.

The Marlow’s 3.2-acre courtyard, developed by landscape architect Parker Rodriguez, is a contemporary outdoor space that balances community amenities with a sense of place. Residents have access to a resort-style pool with views of the surrounding park, an outdoor kitchen and grilling area, fire pit seating, outdoor TV, open-air fitness areas, multiple zones for social gathering, and an oversized stone fireplace structure situated at the heart of it all.

For this project, Quarry Connections supplied Natural Facing Cromwell Valley Roughly Rectangular natural thin stone veneer. Cromwell Valley is a locally-quarried material with a natural split face — meaning the exposed surface is the result of the stone breaking along its natural grain rather than being cut or polished. This produces the kind of authentic texture and depth that manufactured veneers cannot replicate.

The roughly rectangular format provides a structured, coursed aesthetic while retaining the organic size variation inherent to natural stone. The warm gray and silver tones of the Cromwell Valley material complemented the property’s mix of reclaimed wood, glass, and contemporary architectural finishes, grounding the entire outdoor space in a way that felt both intentional and timeless.

A Double-Sided Stone Fireplace as the Courtyard’s Centerpiece

The courtyard features a large-scale double-sided stone fireplace structure that serves as a natural architectural divider between the pool deck and the garden seating area. Installed by Telligent Masonry, the fireplace wall rises to an impressive height and is clad entirely in the Cromwell Valley thin stone veneer, with a reclaimed wood mantel beam that adds warmth and contrast to the rugged stone surface.

On the pool deck side, the fireplace opening frames a view through to the water, with a concrete fire feature and woven lounge seating arranged on flagstone pavers in front of it. On the garden courtyard side, the stone structure serves as a backdrop for intimate seating areas and lush native landscaping.

Telligent Masonry’s installation work on the fireplace demonstrates the level of craftsmanship required to execute a natural thin stone veneer application at this scale. The roughly rectangular pattern requires skilled laying to maintain consistent coursing across a large wall plane, and the finished result reflects both the quality of the material and the care of the installation.

What Is Natural Thin Stone Veneer and Why Is It Used on Large Projects?

Natural thin stone veneer is real quarried stone that has been sawn to a consistent thickness — typically between 3/4 inch and 1.5 inches — rather than being used at its full bed depth. The exposed face retains the authentic texture of the natural stone, without the weight and cost constraints of full-thickness material.

Why use thin stone veneer instead of full-thickness stone?

Because thin stone veneer is lighter than full bed stone, it places less structural load on the substrate, which matters for tall walls, elevated decks, and commercial construction where weight is a design consideration. The reduced thickness makes it significantly lighter and well-suited for applications like tall fireplace walls, exterior facades, and feature walls where structural load is a consideration. It is also easier to handle and install at scale without sacrificing the visual impact of natural stone.
